Foreign ministers from the United States, China, and Russia will converge in Manila next week for a major round of Association of Southeast Asian Nations talks set against a backdrop of global tensions. The ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting opens on 16 July and is expected to address regional flashpoints including South China Sea disputes, the Myanmar crisis, and the Iran conflict.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit the Philippines from 19 to 23 July to attend the ASEAN-related gatherings. He is expected to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as a precursor to a Trump-Xi summit agreed for 24 September at the White House, though the two sides have not yet confirmed whether the meeting will take place.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is also expected to travel to Manila for the ASEAN series of meetings, adding further diplomatic weight to the gatherings.
