ASEAN foreign ministers held an informal meeting with Myanmar's top diplomat in Bangkok on Sunday, marking the first face-to-face engagement with the country's foreign minister since the military seized power in 2021.
Philippines, this year's ASEAN chair, co-initiated the session with host Thailand as a follow-up to the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu in early May and a visit by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono to Naypyidaw on June 8. Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia's readiness to help Myanmar end its civil war through the bloc's Five-Point Consensus, a framework reaffirmed by all ASEAN members as the basis for resolving the crisis.
Myanmar's Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe told the gathering that detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi remains in good health. The civil war that followed the coup has killed an estimated 100,000 people.
