The U.S. State Department said Monday it has revoked more than 175,000 visas issued to foreign nationals since President Donald Trump began his second term, citing visa violations, criminal offenses, and security concerns.
The department said the most common grounds for cancellation were assault, driving under the influence, theft, and drug offenses that required law enforcement intervention. The figure is up from more than 100,000 revocations reported in January.
The announcement comes days after Trump signed executive orders aimed at restricting birthright citizenship and combating so-called birth tourism. In a related move, a U.S. embassy in North Africa canceled more than 100 visas held by parents who traveled to the United States to give birth so their children could obtain American citizenship.
