U.S. airport immigration arrests surge as detainees flood courts with habeas petitions

· Society USA

U.S. immigration authorities have arrested as many as 40 migrants per day at airports, a sharp increase from an average of 10 daily in May 2025, with operations spanning at least 15 airports and nationals from over a dozen countries. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights has issued a travel alert urging immigrants with pending applications to consult lawyers.

Total migrant detentions reached their highest level in July, exceeding 50,000, Department of Homeland Security figures show. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the agency would intensify street-level enforcement. U.N. High Commissioner Volker Türk called for an independent investigation into deaths involving immigration agents.

Migrants have filed more than 65,000 habeas corpus petitions since January 2025, a record figure. The Immigrant Defenders Law Center produced a bilingual guide to help detainees navigate the process.
