ICE arrests surge past 43,000 in June as agency faces scrutiny over fatal shootings

· Society USA

U.S. immigration agents arrested 43,138 people in June, averaging 1,438 per day, as the Trump administration pushed immigration enforcement toward a goal of 2,000 daily arrests, according to newly released data. The arrests, carried out by both ICE and Customs and Border Protection, brought the total detained population to roughly 59,400 by month's end, up from 58,200 in May. ICE and CBP detentions totaled more than 43,000 bookings into ice custody alone as non-criminal detainees surged. ICE has deported more than 590,600 people since January 2025, though the agency failed to publish the required biweekly enforcement data from early April until July 20, missing a congressional mandate in place since 2019. The release came after two migrants were fatally shot by ICE agents in separate July vehicle stops in Texas and Maine, prompting U.S. senators to demand reforms under Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who took office earlier this year.
