The U.S. federal budget deficit swelled to a record $432 billion in July, driven by surging debt-service costs that now exceed $3 billion a day.
Unadjusted outlays reached $766 billion for the month, while net interest on the public debt totaled $963 billion over the first ten months of fiscal 2026 — up 14 percent from the prior year. The Congressional Budget Office projects the full-year shortfall at $2.1 trillion, with the debt-to-GDP ratio standing at 122 percent. Tariff refunds totaled $33.4 billion in July following a Supreme Court ruling that struck down broad emergency duties.
Separately, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed U.S. intervention to backstop the Japanese yen, with a photographed to-do list showing plans to purchase $5 billion to $10 billion in yen.
