Two trams collided on Rotterdam's Erasmus bridge at around 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, injuring 15 people, one seriously, after one of the vehicles derailed in the crash. Authorities initially reported 18 casualties before revising the figure down. Seven people were taken to hospital, and a rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene.
The bridge was closed to traffic and tram lines 3 and 5 were suspended following the incident. Two cars were also damaged in the collision. The seriously injured person, who had been trapped in the wreckage, was freed by emergency crews.
Operator RET said it had reviewed footage of the crash and expressed sympathy for those affected. An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
