A man and a woman, both in their 70s, were pronounced dead at the scene following a two-car collision on the R173 at The Bush, County Louth, shortly before 3:10 p.m. on July 16. A male driver and a female passenger in their 30s were airlifted to Beaumont Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin with serious injuries, and the bodies of the deceased were removed to Louth County Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
An Garda Síochána have appealed for witnesses or dash-cam footage from the R173 between Dundalk and Carlingford between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the day of the crash. The road was closed for a technical examination but has since reopened.
The deaths brought to four the number killed on Irish roads on July 16, which also saw a hit-and-run fatality in Belfast and a single-vehicle death in County Tipperary. Road fatalities in Ireland have now reached 100 in 2026, up from 90 over the same period last year.
