Tunnel closure disrupts rail services to Heathrow Airport

· Society GBR

Rail services to Heathrow Airport faced severe disruption on Monday after a tunnel closed for safety reasons between Hayes & Harlington and the airport terminals, Network Rail said.

A water leak in the tunnel limited operations to a single line, halting Elizabeth line services to Heathrow Terminals 4 and 5 until the end of the day. Heathrow Express cut its schedule by half, running just two trains per hour from London Paddington. Transport for London reported severe delays on routes into Paddington.

National Rail advised passengers to use the Piccadilly line, Great Western Railway, or bus routes 105, 278, 350, and 482, with tickets accepted across those services. Major disruption is expected to continue through the end of Monday. A multi-vehicle crash on the M25 and a fire on the line near Purley also disrupted services to Gatwick Airport.
