U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Washington and Tehran are engaged in direct negotiations, describing Iran as increasingly willing to reach a deal. The talks are being led by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, among others.
Trump characterized Iran as becoming more "serious" by the day for what he called "obvious reasons," noting that while the discussions represent the most earnest engagement he has seen, no agreement has been reached. The remarks came hours after Trump met with senior White House officials and advisers to weigh options regarding the conflict with Iran.
Despite the approach of midterm elections in November, Trump said he is in no rush to finalize an agreement, stressing the importance of doing things properly. The diplomatic push follows 13 consecutive nights of U.S. strikes against Iranian military targets through Thursday.
