President Donald Trump declared on Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested under any circumstances on American soil during his planned September visit to the UN General Assembly in New York.
The statement responds to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who told The New York Times his office was reviewing whether to arrest Netanyahu upon arrival, asserting he would use every legal tool available if the prime minister entered the city.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Neither the United States nor Israel are members of the court or recognise its jurisdiction.
The diplomatic dispute surfaces as US military casualties mount, with 17 American service members killed and more than 420 wounded since joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran began on 28 February.
