Israel has shared intelligence with Washington warning that Iran recently developed a specific plan to assassinate President Donald Trump, marking a potential escalation in the broader conflict between Washington and Tehran.
The warning, which reached Washington this week, contained details of a newly devised plot, according to reports from CNN and the Wall Street Journal. However, US officials suggested the Israeli intelligence may be an attempt to influence Trump's decision-making in the Iran war. Trump, speaking to reporters at a NATO summit in Ankara on July 8, appeared to allude to the threat, saying Iran wanted to kill him.
The US-Iran war began on February 28, and hostilities resumed this week after a fragile ceasefire signed in June collapsed. Iran has long vowed retaliation against Trump for ordering the 2020 killing of Qassem Soleimani. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone on July 9 and agreed to maintain coordination between their governments.
