A multi-ton steel beam collapsed onto the A81 motorway near Bad Dürrheim in Germany's Black Forest region early Wednesday, forcing a full closure of the highway and injuring one construction worker.
The beam, one of four supporting a scaffolding structure, crashed onto the roadway during installation work on a bridge undergoing renovation. A worker suffered a broken foot in the incident. The A81 southbound toward Singen was completely blocked, with traffic diverted between the Bad Dürrheim and Geisingen junctions. The nearby A864 connector toward the Bad Dürrheim interchange was also shut.
Police said disruptions are expected to last at least into the late afternoon. A structural engineer is to inspect the bridge, located south of Bad Dürrheim near Oberbaldingen.
