Thousands of activists from across Europe converged on Genoa on Saturday for a national march marking the 25th anniversary of the violent 2001 G8 summit protests, remembering the killing of Carlo Giuliani and the police raid on the Diaz school and Bolzaneto barracks.
The "No Remorse" procession set out from Piazza Alimonda — renamed in Giuliani's honour — after a pre-gathering of young demonstrators outside the Diaz school. The route wound through via Tolemaide, the site of the 2001 clashes that preceded Giuliani's death, and terminated in Piazza De Ferrari. Marchers hung banners reading "Denazified zone" outside the closed CasaPound office. Former Genoa Social Forum spokesman Vittorio Agnoletto joined the crowd, which included veterans of the original demonstrations.
Organisers framed the march as the opening of a new mobilisation cycle focused on anti-fascism, anti-militarism, and opposition to the war in Gaza. Police maintained heightened surveillance ordered by Questor Silvia Burdese, with further commemorations — a vigil on Sunday and a torchlight procession to the Diaz school on Monday — still to come.
