Clara Tauson fell in straight sets to Nikola Bartunkova in her opening match at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto early Wednesday, with the Czech player winning 6-3, 6-4.

The defeat carries significant ranking consequences for the 27th-seeded Dane. Tauson, who reached the semifinals in last year's edition and had 390 points to defend, risks dropping roughly ten places from her pre-tournament ranking of 30th. Only the top 32 players earn seeds at the US Open, which begins in New York on 30 August.

The loss extends a difficult season for Tauson, who finished 2025 ranked 12th in the world after a breakthrough year but has since slipped 18 spots. She disclosed in May that she was dealing with two herniated discs. Bartunkova, ranked 42nd, had upset Bianca Andreescu in the first round to set up their first career meeting.
