The Syrian Democratic Forces' integration into state institutions is complete, SDF commander Mazloum Abdi announced on Thursday, marking the end of the Kurdish-led force's autonomous administration in northeastern Syria.
The Syrian army has entered the main northeastern cities of Hasakah and Qamishli, while the government took control of Qamishli airport and the region's oil fields. In Hasakah, work crews began removing SDF flags and symbols from public squares, coinciding with a municipal beautification campaign. The dissolution of the SDF was announced in exchange for forming a division within the Syrian army composed of former SDF fighters, along with a Kurdish brigade based in Aleppo. Abdi also confirmed that all foreign fighters have left the force's ranks.
The comprehensive agreement, announced on January 30, included a ceasefire and a roadmap for military and administrative integration, with a spokesperson for the presidential team saying the formal dissolution announcement would come soon.
