US brokers deal for IAEA to remove nuclear material from secret Syrian site

· Diplomacy USAISRSYR

The United States has brokered an agreement between Syria and Israel allowing International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to remove nuclear material from a secret Syrian storage facility known as "Site 99", officials from both countries disclosed.

The Trump administration mediated the understanding between Damascus and Jerusalem, with the agreement signed three weeks ago. The site holds yellowcake uranium and remnants from the Al-Kibar reactor complex — material that, while unsuitable for nuclear weapons, could potentially be enriched for radiological devices. Israeli forces had sealed the facility's entrances after Bashar al-Assad's departure from power in late 2024.

Israel has warned it would strike the site again if the material is not removed or if Syria attempts to access it. The current Syrian government has signalled willingness to cooperate with Washington and permit IAEA inspections, though the material has not yet been transferred as work at the site continues.
