Sydney Marathon medal mistakenly depicts Munich stadium instead of local venue

The TCS Sydney Marathon has issued an apology after its finisher medal was found to depict Munich's Allianz Arena instead of the city's own Allianz Stadium, a blunder confirmed just days before the race.

A marathon spokesperson acknowledged the mix-up, describing it as an "unfortunate error" ahead of the 30 August event, which is expected to draw more than 40,000 runners. The reverse side of the medal features artwork by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, which remains unaffected. Munich's Allianz Arena responded to the gaffe with a tongue-in-cheek post on Instagram.

The mistake echoes a similar medal error at the Great North Run in 2025. Last year's Sydney Marathon attracted about 35,000 participants from more than 120 countries.
