Switzerland forward Breel Embolo was dismissed for simulation during his side's World Cup quarter-final against Argentina, a decision that shifted a tense match decisively in Argentina's favour.
Embolo had already been booked in the 44th minute for a foul on Leandro Paredes. In the 71st minute, the referee initially penalised Paredes with a yellow card but reversed the call following a VAR review, instead cautioning Embolo for going down too easily under a challenge. The second yellow triggered an automatic sending-off, leaving Switzerland a man down from the 72nd minute.
Embolo left the pitch in tears, and Switzerland were ultimately beaten 3-1 after extra time. Argentina now advance to face England in the semi-final.
