Switzerland advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years, defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout after 120 minutes yielded just two shots on goal. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved a penalty from Cucho Hernandez, while Granit Xhaka was among those to convert from the spot.
Kobel described the achievement as one of the most beautiful moments of his career, adding that the milestone mattered for the entire Swiss population. Head coach Murat Yakin said his game plan worked exactly as planned, while defender Manuel Akanji declared the World Cup title is not far away.
Switzerland now face defending champions Argentina at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Saturday, July 11.
