A Swedish woman in her 40s was shot and wounded on Monday evening in the Baixa district of central Lisbon, prompting Portuguese authorities to increase police patrols in the tourist area.
The woman was hit in the chest on Rua Augusta around 18:15 local time after becoming caught in a confrontation between the gunman and another man. She was taken by ambulance to Hospital de São José, where her condition was described as stable and not life-threatening. Two suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, and one man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The Judicial Police are leading the investigation.
The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirmed its embassy in Lisbon is in contact with the injured woman. In response, the PSP and Municipal Police will reinforce patrols and crack down on illicit activity in Baixa and other tourist zones.
