Spain's Supreme Court has rejected an emergency request by the opposition People's Party to compel three government ministers to appear in the Senate before the end of August, ruling on Saturday that the opposition failed to demonstrate the legally required urgency.
The PP filed the administrative appeal on Aug. 20 after Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and Defence Minister Margarita Robles skipped Senate committee sessions the previous week related to a late-July migrant surge at the Ceuta border with Morocco. The party sought an order requiring appearances within 24 hours and demanded the government stop substituting Senate appearances with House sessions.
The court's vacation chamber denied the so-called ultra-cautious measure, stating that parliamentary oversight need not occur during August's extraordinary session period. The court converted the request into standard precautionary proceedings, giving the state attorney's office 10 days to respond.
