Italy to extend Spain border controls past 15 August, cites social media-driven migration risk

Part of Ceuta Migrant Crisis

Italy will maintain border checks on arrivals from Spain beyond 15 August, with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi saying the Schengen suspension will not be lifted until security risks are completely excluded following the mass crossing into Ceuta in late July.

Piantedosi told a parliamentary committee that Rome's concern stems not from Madrid's response but from the objective ungovernability of a crisis of this magnitude, pointing to social media campaigns allegedly pushing thousands of non-EU nationals toward the Spanish enclave. Moroccan authorities are redeploying security units from other regions to areas near Ceuta, he added.

The controls target only third-country nationals arriving from outside the EU and do not affect tourist flows, Piantedosi said. The government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni originally suspended the Schengen agreement on 31 July; Spain retaliated with reciprocal checks running until 7 September.
