Spain has declared the Pazo de Meirás a democratic memory site, according to a resolution published Friday in the Official State Gazette. The estate in Sada, A Coruña, served as the summer residence of dictator Francisco Franco from 1938 until his death in 1975.
The designation highlights the estate's role in understanding Spain's contemporary history, noting its association with anti-democratic forces during the Second Republic and the forced contributions that funded its acquisition. A 1938 junta was formed to purchase the property for Franco, with a simulated deed registered in his name in 1941.
The state reclaimed ownership through a 2020 court ruling, confirmed on appeal in 2021. The Ministry of Territorial Policy stated that any future use of the property must preserve its historical memory.
