Solar energy became Portugal's largest source of electricity production for the first time in July 2026, accounting for 19% of the country's power consumption, data showed.
Renewable sources supplied 53% of electricity consumed last month, with hydropower contributing 16% and wind 13%. Non-renewable generation covered 13%, while imports met the remaining 34% of demand. Over the first seven months of 2026, renewables secured 68% of Portugal's electricity.
Total electricity consumption rose 3% year-on-year in July, or 1.8% when adjusted for temperature and working days. Natural gas consumption fell 7.3% in the same period, with gas-fired power generation dropping 20%. The Sines LNG terminal handled all national gas supply, with roughly two-thirds of imports originating from Nigeria and the rest from the United States.
