Two gorillas have died at Zoo Basel after a silverback fatally bit his own four-day-old daughter and severely injured another male in separate incidents on the same day.
The infant, a female born on July 11, was killed by an unintended bite to the chest from her 14-year-old father, Yeba, for whom it was the first offspring. Her 37-year-old mother, Joas, continues to carry the dead infant. Earlier the same day, Yeba bit 11-year-old male Mobali so badly that the animal had to be euthanised.
Yeba arrived in Basel from a French zoo in October 2025, less than a year before the incidents.
