A 72-year-old man has died nearly two months after being attacked by an escaped tiger near the eastern German city of Leipzig, prosecutors said. The man succumbed to his injuries in hospital on 10 July 2026.

The animal had broken out of a private enclosure belonging to a former circus performer on 17 May in Dölzig, near Schkeuditz, and was shot dead by police after it was spotted near a garden allotment complex. The victim was treated for injuries sustained during the attack but ultimately died in hospital on Friday.

The Leipzig public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into negligent homicide by omission and ordered an autopsy. Six other big cats from the same private facility have been transferred to an animal sanctuary in Spain.
