Atlanta authorities have enacted sweeping security measures ahead of Wednesday's World Cup semi-final between Argentina and England, a fixture classified as the tournament's highest-risk match due to the potential for violence.
At the request of Buenos Aires, Argentine and English supporters will be kept apart at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, entering through separate gates. Extra officers have been deployed around the city, with increased patrols planned near the venue and entertainment districts. Security has also been bolstered at both teams' hotels and along their transport routes. Private stadium staff will be reinforced in stands and common areas.
The precautions reflect longstanding tensions rooted in the 1982 Falklands War and historic football rivalry. The match is the first knockout meeting between the two nations since 1998 and comes amid renewed political friction over the Falkland Islands. Chief Constable Mark Roberts noted England fans had set a positive example throughout the tournament.
