SAP avoids EU antitrust fine with decade-long customer freedom pledge

· Business DEUBEL

SAP has averted a potential European Union antitrust penalty by offering binding concessions that make it easier for customers to switch providers or terminate contracts, ending a probe that began in September 2025.

The commitments, valid globally for ten years, include an alternative method for calculating license fees, the elimination of reinstatement charges, and reduced back-maintenance costs. Customers will also be able to end agreements under circumstances such as insolvency or completed projects and select different support providers for various parts of their SAP systems. Breaching the terms could result in fines of up to ten percent of global annual revenue.

EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera said the decision grants customers greater freedom to choose maintenance and support services, adding that the agreement should serve as a warning to other companies.
