London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been awarded a peerage by Keir Starmer on the outgoing prime minister's final full day as Labour leader, joining a list of 26 new members of the House of Lords announced Thursday.
Khan, the first Muslim mayor of a major Western capital, has ruled out returning to the Commons or serving as a minister under incoming leader Andy Burnham, choosing instead to concentrate on his remaining mayoral duties. He received a knighthood in 2025 and will decide in 2027 whether to seek a fourth term in 2028.
The wider peerage list includes broadcaster June Sarpong on the Labour benches and crossbench appointments for Sir Chris Wormald and Sir Brian Leveson. Burnham is reportedly planning to appoint the UK's metro mayors to the Lords himself.
