A rain-triggered landslide struck Pengshui County near the Wujiang River in southwest China on Thursday morning, burying more than 10 residential buildings and prompting a major emergency response.
The slide hit Hanjia subdistrict at approximately 9:08 a.m. local time. A community worker had spotted falling rocks around 8 a.m., triggering an emergency warning that led to the evacuation of some 1,110 residents before the main collapse. Rescuers pulled at least 10 people from the debris, with none reportedly in life-threatening condition.
China's National Disaster Prevention and Relief Committee activated a Level IV emergency response, dispatching a working group to the scene, while the Ministry of Natural Resources elevated its geological disaster defense response to Level II. One hundred rescue workers arrived with more than 50 sets of detection and search equipment. Authorities have sent more than 8,000 disaster-relief items to Chongqing as the search continues for an unconfirmed number of people still buried.
