More than 31,000 people have signed a petition demanding a state investigation into the death of Jason Arday, as mourners gathered across Britain to remember the former Cambridge professor after he was found dead on Friday.
More than 200 people attended a vigil in Cambridge on Sunday afternoon, organised by Arday's postdoctoral students. Further vigils are set for Monday evening in both Cambridge and London, including a gathering on the steps of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square at 6 p.m. Police have said they suspect suicide or natural causes. Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the death as "a tragedy on so many levels".
Meanwhile, a fundraiser for Arday's family has raised more than £60,000, and the University of Cambridge has stated it will examine the circumstances surrounding his appointment and tenure.
