A shirt worn by Pelé during the 1958 World Cup final sold for $4.9 million (£3.6 million) at a Sotheby's auction in New York, making it the second most valuable football jersey ever sold at auction. The record remains held by Diego Maradona's 1986 "Hand of God" shirt, which fetched £7.1 million in 2022.
The jersey drew 10 bids from more than five bidders before going to an unidentified buyer. Pelé, then 17, scored twice against Sweden in that final. He gave the shirt to teammate Dida after the match, and it remained in Dida's family, was displayed in a museum, and previously sold at auction in 2004 for $105,600.
The sale featured other notable items: Maradona's 1986 World Cup captain's armband sold for $512,000, Lionel Messi's 2017 Champions League shirt for $217,600, and David Beckham's 2002 World Cup England cap shirt for $51,200.
