A partial solar eclipse will sweep across Finland and Sweden on the night of August 12–13, coinciding with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. The event will obscure between 83 and 85 percent of the Sun across Finland, according to the Astronomical Association Ursa, with maximum coverage in Helsinki reaching 83 percent at 8:52 p.m.
In Sweden, the eclipse is visible across the country, with coverage ranging from roughly 81 percent in Kiruna to over 83 percent in Malmö and Gothenburg at peak totality around 8 p.m. local time.
Finnish broadcaster Yle will air a live stream of the eclipse beginning at 8:20 p.m. from the Vaasa Astronomical Association's Andromeda Observatory in Sundom, featuring an interview with association chair Kaj Höglund. Ursa notes that a partial eclipse of comparable depth will not return to Finland until 2036, and the country's next total solar eclipse is not expected until 2126.
