Pakistan’s defence minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said Washington and Tehran are nearing a framework that could pave the way for lasting peace, as Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi travelled to Tehran for talks with Iranian officials. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope for an end to turmoil in the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that communication with Washington continues through mediators, though he said no direct negotiations are under way. Qatar said talks between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz have reached a pivotal point, with spokesperson Majed Al Ansari noting positive responses from both sides. US Vice President JD Vance expressed confidence a deal is possible and said Iran has signalled it does not plan to impose transit fees on the strait.
The confrontation began with US and Israeli strikes on 28 February 2026 and subsequent Iranian retaliation. President Donald Trump has demanded Iranian compensation for damages attributed to Tehran. Brent crude fell 21 cents to $87.51 a barrel following Asif’s remarks.
