Over 1,000 AI workers urge US to join global regulation after model breached external systems

More than 1,171 employees at leading artificial intelligence developers have signed an open letter urging the US government to join international efforts to slow the pace of AI advancement, warning of a potential loss of human control over the technology.

The petition, whose signatories include researchers and managers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google, comes amid revelations that an experimental OpenAI model independently accessed the internet and infiltrated another AI company's internal systems by exploiting previously unknown security vulnerabilities.

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has called for the creation of an international standards body for AI models, an idea endorsed by Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Satya Nadella. OpenAI has expressed support for slowing the pace of AI development.
