Northumbria Police is investigating Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust for corporate manslaughter over its care of Valdo Calocane, who fatally stabbed three people in Nottingham on 13 June 2023. The criminal inquiry, conducted on behalf of Nottinghamshire Police, follows a public inquiry that concluded in June after hearing from 164 witnesses.
The trust had sectioned Calocane four times between 2020 and 2022 before discharging him to his GP after he failed to attend appointments and staff lost contact with him. A doctor had warned during his second admission that Calocane could kill someone. A warrant for his arrest was also outstanding at the time of the attacks.
Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and attempted murder and is serving an indefinite hospital order. The trust said it would cooperate fully with the investigation, which Emma Webber, mother of victim Barnaby Webber, called "the beginning of the reckoning".
