OSLO — Norway inaugurated a national memorial on Sunday in Oslo's renovated government quarter, honouring the 77 people killed in the July 22, 2011 terror attacks. Crown Prince Haakon, government ministers and representatives of survivors' organisations attended the unveiling ceremony in the capital.
The monument, titled "Upholding," was designed by Norwegian artist Matias Faldbakken and features a 12-metre-high by 15-metre-wide mosaic depicting a wading bird, composed of more than 300,000 hand-cut stones. The names of all 77 victims are engraved on the memorial's lower beam.
Anders Breivik killed eight people with a bomb in Oslo and 69 others, many of them teenagers, at a summer camp on the island of Utøya. The attacks remain the deadliest act of violence in Norway since the Second World War.
