Norway forward Alexander Sørloth and his partner Lena Selnes have been subjected to severe online abuse, including death threats and calls for suicide, following Norway's 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in the World Cup quarter-final. The 30-year-old drew fury after missing a two-on-one chance to put Norway 2-0 up in the 43rd minute, shooting straight at John Stones. England equalised shortly after and went on to win in extra time, ending Norway's World Cup campaign.
Sørloth's most recent Instagram post has attracted more than 100,000 comments, many of them abusive. Selnes shared a series of the messages publicly on Sunday, including threats such as "you will be killed" and "jump off a cliff," and urged followers to think before posting hateful comments.
Norway head coach Stale Solbakken advised the squad to stay off social media in the aftermath of the loss.
