North Korea has condemned upcoming joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea as a major provocation, warning that trilateral security cooperation with Japan is turning into a "nuclear alliance." In response to the drills, which are scheduled to begin on August 17, Pyongyang declared it would bolster its nuclear deterrent and accused the U.S. of lowering the threshold for nuclear conflict.
The rhetoric follows North Korea's August 12 test of a ballistic missile launched from Wonsan, which traveled approximately 700 kilometers—a range analysts noted coincides with the distance to Japan's Sasebo naval base. Pyongyang has recently intensified its criticism of Tokyo's defense policies, including Japan's recent Aegis destroyer cruise missile tests and potential nuclearization discussions.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high as North Korea is estimated to have already sent thousands of troops to support Russia's war in Ukraine, with additional forces reportedly preparing for deployment.
