A 101-year-old woman was arrested in Nigeria's Ogun State on Saturday for allegedly selling cannabis, before being released on bail due to her advanced age. Esther Ogunmabo was found in possession of 90 grams of 'skunk' cannabis packaged in retail sachets in the town of Ilisan, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said.
Ogunmabo told investigators she turned to drug sales after a fire destroyed her provisions shop, and that one of her daughters based in Lagos had been supplying the cannabis every four days. The daughter was also arrested in connection with the case. NDLEA chief executive Mohamed Marwa ordered that Ogunmabo be granted bail and given counselling in light of her age.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives intercepted a wooden boat bound for Cameroon in Akwa Ibom State, arresting three people and recovering over 42 kilograms of narcotics. The agency also announced its first-ever seizure of illicit drugs shipped from Thailand.
