A 31-year-old mother and her two-year-old daughter were killed by a lightning strike in Margate, Florida, on Sunday afternoon. Kenya Glasgow and her daughter Kennedi were struck around 2:30 p.m. local time while arriving at a relative's home for dinner.
The pair were found next to their car and rushed to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival despite resuscitation attempts. A male family member nearby felt the electrical current travel through the ground and strike him during the incident.
Florida experiences more lightning strikes than any other US state. While there are approximately 37 million lightning strikes in the United States each year, the odds of an individual being struck remain less than one in a million, and nearly 90% of lightning strike victims survive. The country has averaged roughly 26 lightning-related deaths annually over the past two decades.
