A 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old baby girl died after a 22-foot motorboat capsized near Liberty Island in New York Harbor late Saturday night.

The New York Police Department received an emergency call about the overturned vessel at 10:55 p.m. Twelve people were pulled from the water by the Coast Guard before police arrived. Divers recovered the woman and the infant, who were transported to a hospital and declared deceased on arrival. It remains unclear whether the two victims were related.

The cause of the capsizing has not been determined. The Coast Guard said investigators are en route to interview the vessel's captain.
