Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Melbourne on 8 July for the second leg of a three-nation tour, co-chairing the third Australia-India Annual Leaders' Summit with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese through 10 July.
Speaking at an economic roadmap business event, Modi highlighted opportunities in nuclear and renewable energy, critical minerals, and green hydrogen. AustralianSuper will invest an additional A$500 million in India's National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, while a uranium export agreement could be finalised. Albanese described Modi as a 'living bridge' between the two nations.
The visit comes amid heightened security, with police warning a young person over an alleged threat against Modi. Amnesty International urged the Australian government to raise human rights concerns. A 'Melbourne Meets Modi' community event at Marvel Stadium is expected to draw up to 30,000 people, while the Alliance Against Islamophobia planned a protest for 9 July.
