Messi reaches third World Cup final as Argentina sets up title clash with Spain

Lionel Messi will equal Cafú as the only players to contest three World Cup finals when Argentina faces Spain at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Argentina advanced with a 2-1 semifinal victory over England, overcoming Anthony Gordon's opener through goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez in Atlanta. The win moves Argentina one step from a fourth World Cup title.

Messi has now reached the final in 2014, 2022 and 2026, becoming the sixth player to achieve the feat. He lost the 2014 final to Germany before winning in 2022 against France on penalties. Sunday's final against Spain offers a chance to cement his legacy with a third world championship.
