More than 1,500 bus drivers across north London and Essex began a four-day strike on Tuesday after rejecting a pay and conditions offer from operator Arriva, escalating a dispute over sweltering cab temperatures during the summer's fifth heatwave.
Members of the Unite union voted down the proposal, saying it did not adequately address the risks of working in extreme heat. Drivers have reported suffering heatstroke and near-miss collisions. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said drivers were putting themselves at risk due to appalling conditions. The walkout affects 42 routes, including two Superloop lines and four night services, with garages in Barking, Edmonton, Enfield, Grays, Palmers Green, Stamford Hill, Tottenham and Wood Green taking part.
The current strike runs until Friday morning, with further action scheduled across 11 dates through mid-October. Previous walkouts caused delays and cancellations across the capital.
