Lebanese President Joseph Aoun departed for Washington on Saturday for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, marking the first visit by a Lebanese head of state to the White House since 2009.
The talks will focus on strengthening the ceasefire, securing Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon, and extending state authority. Negotiators from Beirut and Tel Aviv concluded U.S.-mediated talks in Rome agreeing on next steps for pilot zones in the south, though a scheduled meeting on implementation mechanics was postponed without a new date.
Israeli forces remain inside a 10km security zone along the border. The June 26 framework agreement ties Israeli withdrawal to Hezbollah's disarmament with no fixed deadline. More than 4,300 people have been killed and over a million displaced since the conflict began on March 2.
