The 2026-27 La Liga campaign begins this weekend with just five matches, as the league's biggest names remain on the sidelines. FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Club, Real Betis and Real Sociedad will not feature on the opening matchday, having received permission to postpone their debuts due to players' involvement in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals.
Saturday's action opens with Deportivo Alavés hosting Getafe, followed by Sevilla against Rayo Vallecano. Defending champions Barcelona, who have won the last two titles, and Real Madrid are scheduled to begin their campaigns on August 22 and 23.
Among returning clubs, Racing Santander rejoins the top flight for the first time since 2012 with a home match against Villarreal on Sunday, while Deportivo returns to La Liga after an eight-year absence, hosting Elche on Monday. Atletico Madrid opens against newly promoted Malaga on August 19.
