Celta Vigo-Osasuna opener postponed after fungus damages Balaidos pitch

· Sports ESP

Celta Vigo's season-opening La Liga match against Osasuna has been postponed after a fungal outbreak severely damaged the pitch at Estadio de Balaidos, rendering the surface unfit for play. La Liga officials carried out an inspection on Wednesday and rescheduled the fixture from Sunday 16 August to Thursday 27 August. Celta Vigo attributed the deterioration to adverse weather conditions.

Osasuna condemned the decision, calling it an "unacceptable lack of respect" and accusing La Liga of insufficient foresight and professionalism. The club said both sides had agreed to play the match during the international break on 24 or 25 September to avoid fixture congestion, and expressed total disagreement with the new date. Osasuna will refund its 153 travelling supporters, while previously sold tickets remain valid for the rearranged match.

Balaidos has been undergoing renovation for more than a decade and is slated to host matches at the 2030 World Cup.
