Kent's M20 motorway and the A30 running from London to Cornwall have been ranked England's top major roads, each earning a 79% driver satisfaction score in a new national survey. The M27 in Hampshire was rated the worst motorway at 56%, while the A12 between east London and Suffolk posted the lowest A-road rating at 64%.
The Transport Focus poll, covering more than 9,500 drivers in the 12 months to March, found overall nationwide satisfaction reached 71%, up from 69% the previous year. In the South East, where roads are managed by National Highways, satisfaction climbed to 72% from 66% in 2024/25.
Satisfaction with smart motorways rose to 66% from 60%, a gain Transport Focus attributed to the completion of 150 additional emergency refuge areas. The 28-mile M27 has undergone long-running surfacing and junction work that may have affected driver experience.
